This is a year of change for me! I am switching from fifth grade classroom teacher to... drumroll please... Computer Teacher for K-8!

I am very excited about my new role, and I'm furiously working to prepare for the exciting year we're going to have.

In light of the big switch, I am changing my fifth grade blog over to a Computer Class blog... "Cauthen's Computer Crew." I hope to share all the great things we'll be working throughout the year so stay tuned!

Hi, I’m Dejah and I’m going to tell you all about Friday, November 14, 2008.

Our school day begins when we recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the Christian Flag Pledge and the Bible Pledge.

Our teacher, Mrs. C., moves on to Bible class. We read from our book, The Songbird. It’s about a boy named Truxton and his gift of helping birds.

Our next subject is math. We have started a new chapter! It’s about how your calculator works and function machines. We especially like the part about using calculators. When we finished, Mrs. C. said we could play the metric unit game. You have to guess which metric unit the pegs lands on and continue from there.

This is Taylor and Alexis having a good time playing this game.

Meanwhile, Micah and his buddy are enjoying the metric unit game as well.

Next, it’s English. We are working on our diamantes. Diamantes are so much fun! Mrs. C. said “Can’t you notice how the diamante is in the shape of a diamond?” I guess that is how they decided to name it.

Eventually, we move on to reading. We had a reading quiz on our vocabulary words. Taylor and Michael finished their quizzes. I think we studied really hard for the quiz because everyone was very excited.

Finally, it is my favorite part of the school day - lunch!!! They are serving hotdogs and macaroni. There are many students who decide to have hot dogs. Other students select something else. For the first 5 minutes, we have red cup which means we can’t talk to each other.

Afterwards, we line up to go to music class. We play the chimes that we have been practicing for awhile. This goes extremely well.

Before you know it, we have to head back to our classroom for recess. We are playing inside because of the rain. We, therefore, resume our metric unit game since we have to stay inside.

Next, it is time for science. We recently started a new chapter. It is about force and work. Doesn’t everybody work in some way? I like science mostly because it talks about the human body and staying healthy. Force and work is very important to the human race. If we did not have all of the appliances that we need, it would take a long time to accomplish everyday tasks.

Finally, it is time for history. We are learning about Africa. We discovered that many Egyptians are from Africa. They make glass and ceramic bowls. It was very interesting learning about the Egyptians.

Now it is the end of this school day. It is 2:55 - dismissal time. We had an interesting day and we learned a lot. We also had a lot of fun.

Fly your banner high!

We are close to finishing up our novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and we had a good time designing our own flags and banners that we could fly at the Stone Table. They really turned out super, and after Briana had the good idea of sticking hers on the front of her desk, we got everyone to put theirs on display as well.

We can't wait to finish the book this week! We will be watching the movie on Tuesday afternoon (the 24th) in the Hudson Chapel right before we get out for Thanksgiving Break!

We are participating in Operation Christmas Child this year. OCC is a great program that gives Christmas gifts to needy children all over the world some of whom have never gotten a Christmas gift before!

Our class learned about writing business letters recently in English class, and we decided to write letters to various businesses and ask for donations for our OCC boxes.

This morning I got a call from Michael at the Walmart on University. He received a letter from Micah and Andrew. His Walmart agreed to donate a $50 gift card to help our cause.

Since we are running really close to the deadline to get these boxes in, Mrs. Reyborn ran out and did some fun, fun shopping for these needy kids.

Here's Andrew and Micah "packing" the boxes to send out. We were able to fill four boxes with the gift card!

Great job, guys!! Thank you, Walmart!

We have a spelling bee coming up soon!! Two winners will be selected from each fifth grade class to go on and compete against the winners from 5th to 8th grade on December 9th in the School Spelling Bee.

SPIRIT DAY AT NCA

Today, Tuesday, October 14, 2008 was “twin day”. Twin day is the second day of the Homecoming activities planned for the week. All students were encouraged to dress as a twin or either dress up like a famous person. This morning we had chapel and Mr. Seger was our speaker. He talked about Jonah and how he did not obey God and because of his disobedience, he ended up in the belly of a big fish ! During chapel, Mrs. Gramms said, “ Wow, everyone really looks like twins”.

Afterwards, we came back from chapel and started our math work. We checked over our homework. Yesterday, Mrs. C. taught us about money and decimals. She also taught us how to always put a decimal in when you have money. But today, we are learning about place value and decimals. Next Mrs. C gave us some assignments that we needed to do for practice.

It was now time for English. We got our English books out. Mrs. C explained to us what dishonest tactics were. We then finished with English and started to work on Reading. In addition, we always say our vocabulary words each day. Then we opened our reading book and started to read paragraphs in order. Meanwhile, we finished our reading and we headed off to lunch. There we saw Mrs. C. with her twin, Mrs. Fernandez.

After lunch, we went to our special class which was Art. Mrs. Brown taught us how to draw trees with a piece of cardboard. It was a very neat project. Mrs. Brown always has the most creative projects for us to do ! She makes art fun !!! Finally, it was time for recess. This is where all the 5th graders get to come together. We were able to see all of the twins in other classes. My twins were Meagan I., Samantha M. and Kayla M.. Here is a picture of us.

After recess, we went back to the classroom. It was time for History and Science. That is the last thing of the day. Today was a neat day. Spirit week is so much fun and I look forward to the activities for the rest of the week. Spirit weeks ends Friday night with the Homecoming parade and football game. Let’s go Knights !!!

“A Terrific Day at NCA”

On Thursday, it was a pretty good day at NCA. Let me tell you all about it.

On Thursday, the first thing that my class did was that we said the pledges to the American flag, to the Christian flag, and to the Bible. Afterwards we did a Bible Lesson in class. Soon after that, we did a Spelling worksheet where we had to unscramble words in addition to fitting words into sentences. We also did lessons in Math, English, and Reading.

Finally, after all that hard work we went to Lunch and it was good!!! We had tacos. After that, we went to P.E. Our teacher is Mr. Z. We played a game called speedball, which is sort of a mixture of soccer and football. Speedball is kind of hard to describe, but we had lots of fun playing the game. Mr. Z always makes P.E. super fun!

After P.E., we went to recess and played football.Soon it was time to go back to work. In class, we worked on lessons in Science and History.

Not long after that, it was time to pack up our book bags and go home. I had a pretty good day and I hope my classmates did also!

Title: Another Exciting Day in Mrs. C.’s Class
Date: September 23, 2008
Roving Reporter: Taylor L.

Hi, my name is Taylor L. and I am the Roving Reporter for Tuesday September 23rd. Each of us in Mrs. C.’s class is taking a turn at being a Rover Reporter for our class blog. The Roving Reporter’s duty is to take pictures and write about our day. Our class had lots to do today so I’ll get started.

We began our day by saying 1 Peter 1:15-16. We approached Mrs. C.’s desk one-by-one to say our verse. 1 Peter 1:15-16 states, “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct; because it is written, “Be holy for I am holy.”

After we finished our quiz we went to chapel. Mr. Gibbs talked to us about Jonah. Jonah began his journey not being holy and tried to run away from God. He took a shortcut that caused him much grief. After being swallowed by a fish and living in its stomach for three days and three nights, the fish spit him out. He learned a valuable lesson. We are learning this same lesson this year at school. The lesson is to listen to God and obey His commands.

Upon returning to the classroom, we began our math lesson. Mrs. C. taught us about division remainders. This means that not every number divides equally into other numbers. Some have remainders, or “leftover” numbers. During our math lesson, we were interrupted by a Boosterthon member.

The Boosterthon Run is our fundraiser project for this year. Each student is able to run up to 35 laps in a race that is sponsored by our friends and family. We met our goal as a class by getting over $100 per lap sponsored (yeah!). The Boosterthon member came into our class to give us the prizes that we earned for reaching our goal. Some of us received “glow-in-the-dark” wristbands, wristwatches, booster beach balls, vortex footballs and the hall-of-fame pack.

After lunch, it was time for Mrs. Brown’s art class. We started a new project on hair. Each student received a blank piece of paper, and then drew different hairstyles. We drew straight hair, curly hair, wavy hair, braided hair, Mohawk cuts and Afro styles. Mrs. Brown’s class is lots of fun; she always has cool projects for us.

For the rest of the afternoon, we went to recess and studied spelling, science and history.

Our class had a lot of excitement today. We are enjoying our school year. There is so much happening in our class. I am thankful for the opportunity to tell you about a little of it.

All right!! I get to be the very first "Student" of the Week on our blog! :)

I know I'm not really a student in fifth grade, but I thought you all might like to hear a little more about me!

I have been married for 8 years, and I have two children. Haylee is five, and is in Kindergarten this year. She absolutely loves school! Wade is 6 months old and is over in the AEL.

You might remember me around the end of February with a giant belly!

I used to collect elephants, believe it or not! I still think they are so cute, even though my husband thinks I'm crazy. He thinks they are ugly!

The favorite color is... purple and red, just not together. I have red in my kitchen, Living Room and my bedroom! I told you I like red!

My favorite food... oh so very many! Bavarian Creme doughnuts, brownies with walnuts, pasta!

My favorite tv show is... Gilmore Girls - even though it doesn't come on anymore! It's one of my all time favorite shows! :) I know you boys probably don't think that was a good show. You actually might have never even heard of it! I have some of the shows on DVD, but I usually just record them on ABC family and watch them as I grade papers or work on the computer. :) I like watching Reality TV shows too! Survivor is fun to watch. They do some crazy competitions and eat some crazy things sometimes!

My favorite sport is... volleyball. I used to play in high school and college. :)

My favorite musical group is... The Martins.

My favorite part of school is... making meaningful connections with my fabulous students.

My least favorite part of school is.... maybe grading papers!

When I am 25, I will be... Whoops! I've already passed that age! When I WAS 25 I was married and was about to have my very first baby!

Life through the eyes of Moss!

This chapter in Science we are learning about Ecology and Primary and Secondary Succession. Here is an essay written by Taylor L. through the eyes of moss on life in a forest experiencing Secondary Succession after the "interruption" of a forest fire.

Hi, I'm Maddie Moss. Last week a forest fire started because of a lightning strike. It was so sad watching all the animals leave and most of the plants die. After it was over, all that was left was very few trees, pioneer species, which include lichen, moss and blue-green bacteria, and few insects.

After a few days, tress stared growing little by little. Few plants had grown some and grass had grown. More insects started coming and little animals like frogs, lizards and snakes.

By now, lots of plants have grown and bigger animals like bunnies and turtles are coming back. Trees are starting to mature.

It's been many years now and finally the forest is back. The mature softwood and hardwood trees have grown back. All the animals are back. Finally, our forest is back!

What Happened on 9-3-08 at School

Hello, my name is Alexis and I am here to tell you what happened on 9-3-08 at School.

We are now in 5th grade and it is awesome. Lockers, our own girls and boys table and we all get to play together at recess!

How it all began

The story starts right when the bell rings. "Ring" went the bell right at 8:00 a.m. and the day was starting out great. We all sat down and got our bible book and Bible out.

Then Dejah said, "Pledge" and we all said the pledge. After the pledge, we opened our book and started the lesson. It was about how Joseph's brothers sold Joseph to someone else. The story had a happy ending about how Joseph saved the people from a drought and this would not have happened without his brothers selling him.

Next was math, which is one of my favorite subjects. We had a quiz.

You can see how our brains are working hard to get a good grade. After the quiz, we started our math lesson, which was subtraction. I thought the subtraction was easy because I have known subtraction since 1st grade.

Afterwards, we had English class. The day is moving quickly. With the morning moving right along, English class was spent going over chapter one review out of our English book. The whole review page was going over sentences. For example, sentences with prepositional phrases and compound sentences.

The time seemed to fly by to the next subject, reading. We finished our first book today called "Taste Of Blackberries". We filled in the answers to questions regarding chapter 8 and then went over the vocabulary words from Chapter 7.

The time seemed to go by quickly and now my stomach started to rumble for some reason.

Lunch time! We all walked quietly to lunch and got to sit in our new 5th grade lunch tables. The girls get one table and the boys got their own table too. We had to be quiet for the first 10 minutes because we have been getting to loud lately. Eventually, we were able to talk and visit with our friends.

Back to school

Computer class was next and the students seemed to enjoy it. Today we went on MapQuest and then labeled the larger cities in the state like Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte.

Sometimes we have to ask questions and it's great to have a teacher to help us, which was a substitute teacher named Ms. King. At the end of class the students seemed to get excited about our next activity.

Time to Play

Recess seems to be shorter this year, however, all three classes get to play together. Last year, our classes were separated and I missed playing with some of my friends.

The boys played in the field and the girls talked and all of us had tons of fun!

The rest of the school day was taken up by spelling, science and history. Spelling this year is super hard because the words are so long. Science I find very interesting and this year we have been going over cells. In History class, we have been going over the people in the Bible, which is very interesting.

Time to Go!

The day ends at 2:55 p.m. after we pack our bags up at our new lockers! The students seem to really like the lockers. Some have decorated them, while others just like having lockers for the first time. I love my locker and have decorated it with pictures and magnets and a really cool mirror.

End of the day!

What a great day it was. I love 5th grade and all the extra freedom we have; lockers, lunch tables and recess with my friends. Now you know what happened on 9-3-08.

Since Friday is "Spirit Shirt/Jean Day", students should come to school dressed in their regular uniform shirt and jeans.

You can then bring your Spirit Shirt to change into AFTER pictures!

Science Link Project is Coming Up!

Our Science Link Project is coming up soon! It will be due Monday, September 8th.

Here are the three choices you had to pick from and their descriptions...

History Link... Research and write a one page handwritten report on the discoveries and contributions of Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick, and James Watson.

Art Link... Draw and color the three stages of the cell cycle on an 8.5 by 11 inch piece of paper. Include the four phases of mitosis. Label each stage and phase and write a caption that describes what occurs in each one. Remember to use full color!
Journalism Link... Interview someone who has experience having a type of Cancer. Ask that person to share his or her story with you. Take notes of your meeting, and in the style of a magazine article, write a half page to full page handwritten about what you experienced.

Good News for Science!

Good news for you all! The other two fifth grade teachers and I have decided to postpone the Science test two more days! It is now scheduled for Friday, September 5th. This will give you some extra time to study up on all our great info on CELLS!

As I've said before, the last page of the Science test is MOSTLY essay! This means you must have a pretty good understanding of the facts in order to do a good job on those questions! Use your blue study sheet and... study, study, study!

My good friend and neighbor, Mr. Collins, who is fresh back from serving in Kuwait came into school on Thursday with his very cute, though nervous hedgehog, Calvin. The fourth grade was working on their animal observations, so Calvin came in to visit all three fourth grade classes.

While he was here, he graciously decided to spend a few minutes with our class too! Our class asked lots of really good questions, and even got to see Calvin run around on our floor a little bit too. We were sad to see him go, but he had had a long afternoon. Since he is a nocturnal animal, this was very tiring for him to have all this extra excitement during his normal sleeping time!

Thank you Mr. Collins and Calvin for coming to visit us! (Thank you, Briana, for remembering that we could take a picture!)

Why is there an "E" in my Planner??!!

How does our Conduct/Discipline System Work?? Let me clarify things so we can all be on the same page. I want you to benefit from the Daily Conduct Grade you will be seeing each day in your child's planner.

*E* (No strikes earned) An "E" in conduct means that the student's behavior is excellent. It implies that the teacher did not need to stop and correct the student and that the student could be counted on that day to be cooperative and attentive.

*S* (One strike earned) An "S" in conduct means that the student's behavior is satisfactory with no major problems apparent. It is understood that a student might occasionally need some reminders about obeying classroom rules but still deserves an "S" in conduct.

*N* (Two strikes earned) An "N" in conduct means that the student's behavior is below average. The student needed several reminders about obeying the classroom rules.

*U* (Three strikes earned) A "U" in conduct means that the behavior of the student is unsatisfactory. A "U" might be given because of a number of different reasons. It may involve continual talking, being disrespectful, bothering others, disobedience, etc. A "U" in conduct will result in appropriate demerits.

We will be using the strike/demerit system in fifth grade, and both minor and major offenses may earn either a strike or demerit. Every three strikes in a day earns one demerit. Students who accumulate 5 demerits within the nine week grading period will earn a detention.

Today was such a busy, busy day! Orientation was tonight, and there was so much to do to get ready before all the parents and students arrive. We have been working all last week to get things prepared, and today was our last day to get everything done!

I found out I had a new student early this morning, so part of my day was spent preparing everything needed for her! Welcome to our class, Alexandria! I also needed to finish up my lesson plans and stuff my envelopes with all the information our class needs to get a good start on the year.

Miss Whitfield is going to be a student teacher in Mrs. Stanley's room, and she worked most of the day on getting some English files set up for all three of the fifth grade teachers. One thing that teachers work on during the summer and our in-service week is making copies and filing the things our students will be using during the year. I had copied all the English worksheets for all three classes for the year, so Miss Whitfield tackled the project of dividing the sheets among the three teachers and setting up folders for them all!

You didn't know teachers had so much to do before school even started did you??

We had an Elementary meeting this morning in A-wing with all the elementary teachers. Mrs. Grams talked a little with us about what the order of events was for Orientation night, and where we should sit and what we should do. It was one last meeting for any of the teachers to ask any questions and talk together before the 2008 school year starts!

Lunch was chicken nuggets and fries! I love the lunches at NCA. It is so nice to have such delicious and nutritious meals available for us every day! The lunchroom is a lot quieter with just teachers eating! I'm sure it will be MUCH noisier on Wednesday!

I had a lot to do today, and although I didn't get everything done that I wanted to, I was able to make it work! I had a good time meeting all my students and parents and getting a fun start to this school year!

Letter From the Teacher

Dear Parents,
As we begin this school year, I want to welcome you and your child to the Fabulous Fifth Grade and to my class! I am so excited to spend the year getting to know your child! I want to share with you some of our basic procedures to help you better understand what is expected of your child.

Classroom
1) School begins promptly at 8:00 am. Please have your child arrive by 7:45 am to unpack and be ready to start class at that time. Students who arrive past that time will not be allowed to finish unpacking until we have a break. All parents should be out of the classroom by 8:00 am.
2)After 8:15 students will need to go to A-wing office for a pass. Every fifth unexcused tardy in the nine weeks will count as one absence on a student's record.
3) Upon return from any absence, a note from home stating the reason for the absence is required.
4) School is dismissed for our class at 2:55 pm.

Lunches
1) Payment for school lunches should be made in the cafeteria.
2) Soft drinks are only permitted on Wednesdays (including packers). Milk and juice are available for packers as well as complimentary water.
3) Students should memorize their cafeteria account number or bring the number on an index card with them to the cafeteria.

Homework
1) Please be sure your child is prepared for class each day. Homework is always due the following day unless otherwise assigned.
2) Students are given time each morning to copy homework into their planners. Each child is responsible for keeping his/her planner updated each day. Homework is also given for your benefit in Renweb.
3)Any homework not completed will result in a homework slip sent home to be signed. Three homework slips in a quarter will result in detention.
4) A parent must sign the school planner each night after checking your child's homework. Don't forget to let your child do his own work.
5) A folder will be sent home on Tuesday's with your child's work from the previous week. Please sign, work on weak areas, and return the folder to school on Wednesday.

Final Note...
I want to thank you for the great privilege and opportunity of having your child in my class. Please keep me in your prayers as I teach. I want to be the best teacher that your child can have this year!

Of course, it will take all of us working together for your child to have a good year. Please help us achieve this goal by committing to working together as a supportive team and communicating with me any questions or problems that may arise!

15 pts... You turned in at least 3 good photos and deleted all other photos except for those three.

Each photo goes with something in your report.

20 pts...You used the trait of organization.
You included an introduction and a conclusion.
You used transitional words such as furthermore, next, in addition to, finally, afterwards,

2. If you want to write your opinion on a topic, make sure you're not going to be offensive to anyone as you write it.

3. Always make sure you check over your post for spelling errors, grammar errors, and your use of words.

4. Never disrespect someone else in your blog, whether it's a person, an organization, or just a general idea. You don't want someone making a stab at what you are passionate about; don't do it to someone else.

5. Don't write about other people without permission; if you can't get their permission, use first names only. Never share someone else's last name.

7. Watch your language! We're not at home; we are at school. What's written on our blog needs to be professional looking. Try not to use slang.

8. Make sure things you write about are factual. Don't post about things that aren't true or even about things you just THINK are true.

I am starting a blog for the fantastic and totally fabulous fifth grade class of NCA. This will be a place where we can share what's going on through the year. It will not just be ME posting, however!

This is going to be an amazing outlet and opportunity for all of my fifth graders to get their own writing published on the web! We will have various writing assignments and projects going on that will be shared via our blog for everyone to see.

I plan to assign certain news-worthy events to groups of students to "cover." This will involve getting photos, some interviewing, and writing up a short synopsis of the event.
